Steam boiler for the combustion of olive cake

Sugimat designed, manufactured and supplied for the biggest olive-oil mill in Europe, the company San Miguel Arcángel, a turnkey installation in Villanueva del Arzobispo (Jaén) formed, among other elements, by a water-tube steam boiler for the combustion of olive cake. This biomass, derived from the process of extracting oil from olives, is characterised by its high calorific value.

However, this waste also presents a problem related to its ash content and its low melting point. Therefore, the complexity of this fuel required a specific multi-pass water-tube industrial steam boiler design to counteract the effect of fouling on the heat exchange body.

The boiler has an equivalent thermal power of 11 MW and can produce 15 Tn/h of industrial steam. This boiler model is based on the Eckrohrkessel design of ERK, a leading German heater engineering and technology company. Sugimat is the only licensee of the company in Spain.

In addition to the boiler, Sugimat has supplied the combustion system with step grate, the company’s own technology, the control system and the flue gas treatment to guarantee the quality of the emissions to the atmosphere according to 2015/2193 directive.

This model of biomass steam boiler replaces the previous one the company had, allowing it to save significant diesel consumption, as it uses the plant’s own by-product, the olive cake, as fuel for the generation of process steam, making this installation a success case of circular economy.
