Expobiomas Premio Innovación 2021

Sugimat wins the Expobiomasa 2021 Innovation Award with Horizon +

Expobiomasa, the leading international trade show for the bioenergy sector, has awarded the Innovation Award 2021 to Sugimat for its project “Horizon +: self-cleaning rotary boiler for solid waste”. This innovative water-tube boiler effectively combats fouling and the formation of ash deposits inside the boiler, making it a unique and innovative model in the world. The boiler, designed to work with gases from the combustion of solid waste, supports fuels with high percentages of ash.

The award, given by the organisers of Expobiomasa, recognised the innovative nature of the boiler in the biomass sector. In words of Xavier Mas, technical and R&D manager of Sugimat and developer of the idea: “we are very happy to receive this award, it means a recognition to the effort of several years of work and to the bet of Sugimat for the technological innovation as engine of future”. The innovation in its rotary design has turned the Horizon + into a unique boiler in the market, capable of self-cleaning by means of a sand injection system that guarantees the liberation and the dragging of the ash adhered in its interior.

In this sense, in addition to saving downtime for cleaning and avoiding production stoppages, it also saves electricity consumption, as it does not require any compressed air cleaning system. Furthermore, this new boiler model is capable of withstanding very high ash levels and maintain constant performance throughout the entire operating time.

In addition, the Horizon + avoids dead zones in the boiler caused by the preferential paths of the combustion gases, as is the case with static boilers. In addition, its assembly is very versatile, allowing the installation to be located at a low height, saving building costs and civil works.

The Horizon + boiler is designed to work with gases from waste combustion and supports fuels with a high percentage of ash. It is manufactured in power ranges up to 12 MW and can operate with fluids such as thermal oil and hot or superheated water. In addition, it can adapt to different combustion systems such as the step grate, the fluidised bed or the upwelling furnace.

To date, Sugimat has already signed three projects in Spain for a combustion equipment for C grade wood and other woody fuels, as well as three units for UK coupled to ORC turbines, one of them for the combustion of chicken manure, another one for the combustion of RDF and a third one for the combustion of straw and wood waste.

Sugimat, as in previous editions, will be present at Expobiomasa (hall 2 – stand 263), the leading international fair of the bioenergy sector, which will be held in Valladolid from 21st to 23rd September.

The fouling problem

Nowadays, fouling and corrosion problems in boilers and heat exchangers are one of the main problems when recovering solid biofuels.

Waste such as pomace, pruning, bark or chicken manure are examples of biofuels with a high calorific value, which theoretically makes them recoverable, but which nevertheless contain high levels of unburnable substances (between 10 and 40%), as well as chemical compounds that cause deposits on the heat exchange bodies. This leads to a significant decrease in equipment performance, clogging of flue gas passages and corrosion.

Until now, this problem has been solved by the installation of continuous cleaning systems which, although they make the equipment available, do not guarantee that the performance of the equipment (and therefore its energy efficiency) remains stable during the entire operating time. Furthermore, it does not prevent the formation of deposits in the exchange bodies, forcing stops for cleaning when the performance is reduced.
